GROOTE POST ESTATE
Groote Post Unwooded Chardonnay 2017
The chardonnay grows on the highest hill on the property and thus the coolest spot. The unwooded style of Chardonnay is about maintaining freshness, therefore the grapes need to be kept at 14—18 ˚ C during the crush, skin contact period and fermentation. The fermentation in stainless steel tanks lasted 12 days. The wine spent 3 months on the lees before filtration and bottling.
Tropical, citrus and guava flavours are in abundance on the nose and palate. This vintage has a full and concentrated structure with very good ageing potential.
Approximate retail price: R95
Groote Post Kapokberg Chardonnay 2015 (Wooded):
Chardonnay grapes, with small berries, from high lying vineyards are left hanging late into the season to become fully ripe. The juice was fermented in 300-litre French oak barrels and aged on the lees for 10 months, 25% new oak and 75% older oak. This wine has an appealing golden straw colour and an enticing nose of toasted almonds with lashings of butter and zesty lime marmalade on the palate. An elegant chardonnay, it is well integrated with the wood and has a creamy palate.
Approximate retail price: R158
NEIL ELLIS WINES
Neil Ellis Elgin Chardonnay 2015
This wine forms part of the Neil Ellis Regional Range.
Elgin is one of the Cape’s coolest wine growing areas with favourable climatic, soil and topographic conditions.
The Vineyards: These vineyards are positioned on south-facing slopes of which the soil is mainly white mineral sandstone, shale and decomposed granite. The vines are trellised and have access to supplementary irrigation.
Vinification: 30% of the grapes were whole bunch pressed, and the component fermented naturally in French oak casks. 50% of the grapes were destemmed, crushed, pressed and inoculated to ferment and mature in French oak barrels. The remaining 20 % of the wine fermented and matured in stainless steel tank. The three components were matured for 9 months, then blended together before bottling.
Tasting notes: Youthful pale lemon straw colour. Bright nose of ripe apple, peach with biscuit notes. Wonderful concentration of stone fruits with citrus like acidity and good phenolic tension. Trademark elegance and restraint with an extra dimension of creaminess through the finish.
Suggested retail price: R115
Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay 2015
This maiden release is a Terrain-Specific Single Vineyard Limited Release from the Whitehall Farm in the Elgin Valley.
Vineyards: The Neil Ellis Wines philosophy is to craft Chardonnay of great purity, reflecting site and the season in which it was grown. Meticulous attention and care in the vineyard is most critical in allowing that expression. Elgin is one of the Cape’s coolest wine growing areas with favourable climatic, soil and topographic conditions. This vineyard is positioned on south-facing slopes of which the soil is mainly white mineral sandstone and quartz on a clay sub-base. The vines are trellised and have access to supplementary irrigation.
Winemaking: The grapes were whole bunch pressed on a Champagne pressing cycle and using only the cuvée. 100% barrel fermented; using 20% new 228 litre fine-grained French oak barrels and the rest in 2nd and 3rd fill oak barrels. A small percentage of malolactic fermentation was allowed to complete. The wine spent 9 months in 228 litre French oak barrels.
Tasting notes: The Neil Ellis Whitehall Chardonnay is light golden green in colour with very youthful lime and melon aromatics, and gorgeous ripe citrus notes. This elegant Burgundian-style Chardonnay offers great texture, mouth-feel and freshness. It has a restrained mineral edge, with superbly integrated oak, balanced richness and length.
Accolades: This wine recently received a 91 point rating from Tim Atkin in his South African Wine Report.
