Nuiba Wines – more than wines; memories

Nuiba is not just a word, and it’s not just a wine. Nuiba is a place which has very special meaning to its winemaker, Suzanne Coetzee. This love for her family farm in Namibia developed further into her passion for winemaking, resulting in a boutique range of wines, aptly known as the Four Post range.

As the name refers there are four wines in the range, namely a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (1st Post), a Shiraz (2nd Post), a Cape Blend (3rd Post) and the 4th Post being a Semillon Malbec blend. Suzanne sources her grapes from the Piekenierskloof region, known for its bush vines which grow in dryland conditions. These conditions result in small berries with high concentrations and unique flavour profiles. Her winemaking philosophy is to retain the primary grape flavours with minimal interference during the winemaking process. The grapes are fermented in open fermenters which allows for maximum punch downs, where after the wines are transferred to older barrels for malolactic fermentation and ageing.

The limited release 1st Post 2016, a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend,  is a pale-yellow straw colour with green flashes when held up to the light. A zesty wine with full generous ripe fruit aromas, ripe white fleshed peaches and grassy undertones. From entry, this wine is a total joy. The palate shows lively green apple and citrus with a soft mid-palate and a refreshing finish. Fabulous Sauvignon fruit of sweet limes, melon and mango. The weight of the Semillon balances the wine perfectly in the palate, and well-integrated oak adds a rich creamy taste. The perfect food wine.

The Shiraz, also known as the 2nd Post 2016 is a wine with plush red fruit flavours, supported with oak undertones – just enough not to detract from the primary Shiraz fruit flavours. The wine’s grippy tannins make for the perfect accompaniment to a saucy steak or spicy curry.

The Nuiba 3rd Post 2016 is a Cape blend made from 100% Piekenierskloof grapes, and comprises a blend of Pinotage (52%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Grenache (18%).The grapes were carefully sourced from Pinotage vineyards older than 35 years of age, with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from bush vines. The wine has an intense fruit driven character with notes of plums and cherries. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine enough grip to ensure beautiful ageing while the Grenache gives the wine finesse. The wine pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as oxtail and lamb shank.

The 4th Post 2017, a Semillon Malbec blend, completes the range. A first of its kind these two Bordeaux varietals make the perfect match for this unique Rosé-style wine. With grapes sourced from the Stellenbosch area, the wine was fermented in third fill barrels, giving it complexity and mouthfeel, yet still maintaining its fruity flavours as well as freshness. The perfect Summer wine, enjoy chilled on its own or served with a seafood dishes such a seared salmon or paella.
