South Africa and Namibia reveal Town of the Year

Travellers exploring South Africa can visit De Rust in the Western Cape province, which has been voted the Kwela/Rapport Town of the Year 2011.

Residents of South Africa and Namibia were asked to cast votes to pick their favourite from ten finalists – one from each South African province and one from Namibia.

De Rust overcame Swellendam and Robertson to assume the place of Western Cape finalist for this year’s competition.

Alan Winde, regional minister for finance and tourism, said the town’s success will make it ‘one of the must-see destinations in the country’.

He added: ‘The residents of De Rust should celebrate this achievement, which will result in substantial benefits for the whole of the Western Cape.’

Calyvn Gilfellan, chief executive of marketing organisation Cape Town Routes Unlimited, encouraged holidaymakers to experience first-hand the ‘great tourism offering in De Rust and the rest of the Cape Garden Route and Klein Karoo’.

People interested in embarking on a tour of South Africa can begin their journey by catching a flight to one of the country’s major cities, such as Cape Town, Durban or Johannesburg.
