SWD Women cricketers start on high note

Annemie Koen

The SWD Women’s team started their campaign for the 2011/12 season on a high. The Southern Cape women defeated Kei in the opening fixture that was played at the Khaya Majola Oval in Mthatha by 279 runs.

SWD, who batted first, put on a partnership of 150 for the first wicket after both openers, Annemie Koen (109) and Yolande Saaiman (41) excelled with the bat. Other useful contributions by Elzaan Pietersen (22) and Gail Abrahams (44) allowed the visitors to score 319/9 in their innings. The Kei batters were swept away by some good bowling from Abrahams (5/27), Berenice Goliath (2/5) and Monique Booysen (2/7). They were dismissed for only 40 runs (in the 19th of their allotted 50 overs).

The SWD team will have a break now and the next fixture in the CSA Provincial Women’s Challenge will only be in mid-January 2012 when they will travel to Cape Townand Paarl to take onWesternProvince and Boland respectively.
