The SWD U/19’s recorded a resounding victory the past weekend when they defeated Border by an innings and 11 runs in a Cricket South Africa U/19 Three Day Challenge. The match was played at the Bridgton Sport Grounds in Oudtshoorn and was a massive improvement for the the SWD U/19’s who were defeated by 10 wickets againstWesternProvincea week earlier.
Border, who batted first, was dismissed for 187 runs in their first innings. Only Jason van Zyl (58) made an impression with the bat whilst Jurie van Vuuren (2/33), Kobus Scholtz (6/54) and Lance Roelfse (2/36) were the home side’s most successful bowlers. The SWD top order batsmen really come to the front with some outstanding batting performances allowing SWD to score 356 (all out) in their first innings. For the SWD youngsters, who batted for 113 overs, two valuable partnerships steered the innings in the right direction. Bradley Carolus (78; 249 balls, 10×4) and Ruan Stander (63; 103 balls, 10×4) were involved in a partnership of 107 for the 2nd wicket whilst Carolus also shared a 139 runs partnership with Kobus Scholtz (78; 151 balls, 10×4) for the 3rd wicket. Keegan Fortuin also contributed with a valuable innings of 51*.
Border, in their second innings, with a deficit of 169 runs were dismissed early on the third morning for 158. Van Vuuren (5/31) was the pick of the bowlers. He was well assisted by the spin bowling duet Scholtz (3/36) and Roelfse (2/37).
The SWD U/19’s who were without six of their regular players will take a lot of confidence from this match. The batting department will also be boosted with their best ever performance in this format of the game. Their next encounter will be over the weekend 25-27 November 2011 when they will take on Boland in Oudtshoorn.
