KOBUS SCHOLTZ HERO IN SWD U/19’S DEFEAT

Kobus Scholtz

A brilliant captain’s innings by the SWD U/19 skipper, Kobus Scholtz, was the highlight in an innings defeat against Boland the past weekend. In the match that was played at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn, Boland, who won the toss and elected to bat capitalised on a mediocre SWD bowling attack and declared their first innings at 406/6 (after 100 overs). Rudolph Pollard (70), Jean Bredenkamp (55) and Gideon Conradie (93) made impressive contributions with the bat whilst Otniel Baartman (2/62) and Scholtz (2/106) were the home side’s most successful bowlers.

SWD, at 15/3, were under huge pressure soon in their innings but Scholtz, with an unbeaten 123 (221 balls; 4×6, 15×4), and Keagan Fortuin (30) put together a partnership of 80 for the fourth wicket. Without decent support from the other batters, Scholtz fought a losing battle, and SWD were dismissed for 193 – a deficit of 213 runs. Pollard (3/64) and Bredenkamp (3/19) also excelled with the ball.

SWD, thanks to a brilliant bowling performance from Jan Frylinck (5/39), were dismissed for 142 runs in their follow-on innings ensuring Boland to win by an innings and 71 runs. Bradley Carolus (28) and Marcello Piedt (38) were the only SWD batsmen that offered resistance.
