SWD Cricket take on Western Province in Cape Town

Kobus Scholtz makes his debut for the senior team this weekend.

SWD will travel to Cape Town this weekend for a vital clash against defending champions Western Province. The match against WP which is a top of the table clash and is a much anticipated one considering there should be a number of Cobras players playing with the Proteas all back for the 50 over Franchise final.

Coach, Garry Hampson, and his troops will be aiming to maintain their position on top of the leader board but they are well aware that Province, who are currently in the third place, will be a huge test. The men from the Southern Cape will be without one of their main strike bowlers, Wessel Hartslief, who underwent a knee operation last week. His replacement, Lyndon Volkwyn, is not an unfamiliar face in the line-up and is hungry to cement his place in the team. The versatile U/19 captain, Kobus Scholtz, who excelled with an excellent century against Boland U/19 will make his first class debut for SWD.

Christiaan Jonker (batting) and Ross McMillan (bowling) are currently leading the CSA Three Day averages, but Rayan Canning (batting) with Siya Simethu, Brendon Viret and Johan Bothma (all bowling) – all from Province – also feature among the top averages.

The SWD squad for the weekend is: Ross McMillan (capt), Sammy-Joe Avontuur, Burton de Wett, Christiaan Jonker, Waldo Lategan, Brendon Louw, Kobus Scholtz, Paphama Fojela, Douglas Baartman, Gurshwin Rabie, Lyndon Volkwyn, Pieter Stuurman and Erinn Ewerts.
