SWD cement position on top of the provincial log

Gurshwin Rabie – 7 wickets in the match as SWD defeated Western Province

South Western Districts (SWD) maintained their position at the top of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Domestic First Class Three-Day Competition log by beating their nearest rivals, Western Province (WP), by 64 runs inCape Town. It was a comprehensive win for the title chasing SWD. They have outplayed the defending champions and look well on course to claim the Three Day title.

SWD won the toss and batted first. Christiaan Jonker made 92, including nine fours and two sixes, as SWD posted a modest total of 211 in their first innings. Debutant Kobus Scholtz made a valuable 45 whilst wicket/keeper batsman, Brendon Louw contributed 39 (from only 36 deliveries). WP legbreak bowler Weshaam Keraan taking three wickets for just 19 runs. As a result of some outstanding bowling by Phaphama Fojela (4/17) and Gurshwin Rabie (3/33), WP was bundled out for just 115 runs, giving SWD a first innings lead of 96.

Burton de Wett made 78 in SWD’s second innings with Louw again amongst the runs with a well-played 30 while Keraan had another three-wicket haul, taking 3/23.  But the WP wrecker-in-chief was Dane Piedt, who took four for 69 as SWD were bowled out for 208. Needing 305 for victory, WP were all out for 240 – the highest score of the match. Piedt shone with the bat as well as the ball, scoring 54, including five boundaries, while Keraan made 37. Rabie was the best of the bowlers, taking four for 56.

  SWD have a commanding lead on the provincial log, with 74.08 points after four victories and one drawn match.  WP is in second position, with 52.16 points from two wins, two losses and one drawn match. Gauteng, with two victories and a draw in their three matches so far, are in third place, with 46.48 points.

SWD is however still without success in the Twenty20 competition when they lost be 7 wickets. Captain, Ross McMillan (43), was SWD’s top scoring batsman in their innings when they scored 130/7. WP, boosted with the inclusion of Cobra’s power hitter Dane Vilas (71* from 56 balls) scored the winning runs (135/3) with two balls to spare.

SWD’s next match is over the weekend 5-8 January 2012 when they host Boland at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn
