DEFEAT FOR SWD WOMEN’S TEAM

The SWD Women’s team lost both their matches that were played against Western Province and Boland respectively during the past weekend. It was a disappointing performance and the team will look forward to enhance their skills in all the departments of the game before they take on Border and Eastern Province in two weeks’ time. 

Annemie Koen’s team lost to Western Province by 9 wickets and to Boland by 147 runs. 

Both Western Province and Boland fielded several current and ex-National players.

SWD EMERGING TEAM DISSAPOINTED 

The SWD Emerging team that participated in the Cricket Eastern Cape tournament for Emerging teams is: Row 1: Bazil Deal (selector) and Glenton Stuurman. Row 2: Reavan Plaatjies, Bronwell Goeda, Garry Hampson (coach) and Mpho Selowa. Row 3: Erin Ewerts (captain), Merlin Masimela, Rian Botha, Byron Haycock and Christo van Schalkwyk. Row 4: Rhupino Plaatjies, Dumisa Nqgambuza, Justin Jordaan and Kobus Scholtz

The SWD Emerging team had a disappointed visit toPort Elizabeth when they lost both to the Border and Eastern Province in a triangular tournament for Emerging teams within Cricket Eastern Cape. 

In the match against Eastern Province the SWD team were dismissed for only 104 which Eastern Province comfortably won by 6 wickets after knocking of the modest target. Against Border, SWD made 187 with Border who replied with 188/7 for a 3 wicket victory. Rhupino Plaatjies, with bowling figures of 3/16 and 3/29, had an impressive tournament with the ball. Glenton Stuurman made a good half century (50) versus Border.

SWD PREMIER LEAGUE RESULTS 

Sussex, on 29 points, moved to the top position of the SWD Cricket Board Premier League log after round 8 of the competition. The D’Almeida based team dismissed Ramblers for only 80 runs and thereafter recovered from 18/5 to reach the winning target (81/8) for a two wicket victory.

George, who recorded a four wicket win over Union Stars in a match that was reduced to 29 overs per batting side, moved to the second position of the log – 28 points. Union Stars made 166/7 and George replied with 167/6. 

MosselBaykept their chances for a place in the semi-finals alive when they dismissed Harlequins for 93 and thereafter obtained maximum bonus points when they surpassed the target (94/1) with nine wickets in hand. Knysna Cavaliers (122 all out) defeated Pacaltsdorp (103 all out) in a low scoring match in Knysna by 19 runs but they are still at the bottom of the log.

Pirates United maintained their position at the top position of the log in Pool A of the Promotion League after an impressive victory of 7 wickets over Melkhouftontein over the weekend. Ladismith, who beat Mayflower by 5 wickets, also boost their chances for a place in the semi-finals.

The ninth round of the SWDCB Premier League will be contested on Saturday. With all the provincial players available for their respective clubs a tough contest can be expected. Log leaders,Sussex, will travel to Knysna whilst Ramblers will host George at Rooirivier-rift. The winner of the match between Pacaltsdorp United and Mossel Bay will strengthen their position for a place in the semi final whilst Union Stars will be hoping to regain their position at the top of the log when they take on Harlequins at the Military Sport Club in Oudtshoorn.
