Two serving DA councillors in the Eden District Municipality as well as a former DA councillor have appeared in the George Magistrate Court on charges of corruption, notes a report in Die Burger. The trial of Johan Koegelenberg, Henry McCombi and former councillor Patrick Murray will start on 4 June. They are accused of trying to bribe another party’s councillor to vote for DA members when the DA and the ANC were in a struggle for power in 2009. The accused allegedly used an official of the municipality, Deon Noemdoe, as a go-between to offer a R20 000 bribe to Anthony Ewerts, of the NPP. A trap was set where the alleged bribe was produced in R200 notes in municipal offices. Noemdoe previously pleaded guilty to corruption and was fined R6 000.
