The Boland Cavaliers scored seven tries on their way to beating South Western Districts Eagles 46-26 (halftime 20-16) in their Vodacom Cup match at the D’Almeida Stadium in Mossel Bay on Saturday.
The sides matched each other almost blow for blow in the first half but Boland took advantage of a strong south-westerly wind at their backs to score four second half tries to assume complete control of the match.
The game was played mostly in rainy conditions which made handling tough at times. The wind also played havoc in the lineouts where both sides’ hookers battled to find their jumpers.
The Boland victory came about despite their tighthead prop Ross Geldenhuys being yellow-carded after 36 minutes. Geldenhuys’s absence was felt immediately as South Western Districts No 8 Michael Vermaak scored his second try of the first half a minute later to give side a 16-13 lead.
But that lead was short-lived as lock PJ van Zyl crashed over for a try which flyhlaf Elgar Watts converted to give Boland the advantage at halftime.
SWD did score two tries in the second through centre Elrich van Vuuren (his second) and flank Lyndon Hartnick but they were outplayed for the remainder of the game.
Watts kicked four conversions and a penalty for a personal tally of 11 for the match.
The win saw Boland move up to fifth position on the South Section log on 10 points, three behind leaders Western Province.
