The title chase for South Western Districts to claim their first trophy ended in frustration and disappointment when rain had the final say in Bloemfontein the past weekend. Nevertheless SWD showed the greatest improvement this year, finishing the season in third place with 144.58 points. They drew in their away match against Free State in Bloemfontein where Christiaan Jonker scored an outstanding 103 from 126 balls to give them a first innings lead of 238 runs after being put in to bat by their host. Gino Vries and Patrick Botha were the stand-out bowlers of the innings, taking 4/52 and 3/22 respectively.Free Stateplayed right through day two and declared on 168/4 on day three. There was not enough time for a second innings to be played, leaving the match drawn.
A consistently good performance over the season by Griqualand West (Griquas) saw them retain their number one log position without playing a match in this past weekend’s last round of matches and clinch the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Provincial Three-Day Competition title.
Griquas lost only one match this season – against SWD – and won six matches and drew six more. They top the log table with 151.70 points.
Gauteng claimed second place after gaining four points from their drawn match against Border in East London on the weekend.
