Warriors contracts for top SWD cricketers

Gurshwin Rabie, the SWD main strike bowler and batting hero, Christiaan Jonker, who had an impressive season in the Cricket South Africa provincial challenge competition were both rewarded with professional contracts for the Chevrolet Warriors. With 62 (eight for the Warriors and 54 for SWD) sculpts, Rabie bagged the most wickets in South African first class cricket the past season and he also topped the bowling averages with 14.87. Rabie, earlier in his career whilst a student at the University of theWestern Cape, played professional cricket for theCapeCobra’s. The most impressive newcomer on the international scene, Protea fast bowler Vernon Philander, is in the second place with 57 wickets.

Christiaan Jonker, with 1189 runs (five centuries and four fifties) was the top runs scorer in first class cricket – followed by Pieter Malan (of Northerns with 1035) and Protea opener, Alviro Pietersen (1029 runs). With an average of 59.45 he finished 9th overall on the list of averages. Both Rabie and Jonker signed contracts with the Chevrolet Warriors for the 2011/13 season but when not on franchise duty they will be eligible to play for SWD.
