Rotarians set student off on cycle mission through the Garden Route

AN EDENBRIDGE university student is planning to cycle 360 miles in just six days.

Sophie Edelsten, 21, who studies classics at Oxford University, is fundraising for charity Hope for Children and will be cycling as part of a 40-strong team of students from Oxford and Nottingham universities.

DONATION: Edenbridge Rotary President Dave Francis wishes Sophie Edelsten luck for her ride.

Miss Edelsten, of Coomb Field, and the team will cycle the Garden Route in South Africa.

Miss Edelsten told Edenbridge Rotarians of her mission as they donated £250 towards the cause, saying: “It will be tough – but I can do it.

“As well as being a keen cyclist, I row as a member of the Oxford Oriel college women’s first eight.

“This means 11 training sessions a week, so I know that I have plenty of stamina for this new challenge.”

As well as rowing and cycling, Miss Edelsten is a server at Edenbridge’s parish church when she is at home.

Currently in her penultimate year atOxford, she hopes to pursue a career in sports event management.

Rotary president Dave Francis told her: “Having met you and heard what you have to say, our club feels that you will succeed both in this, and whatever else that you plan to do in the future.”
