With the change over from autumn to winter 2012, George residents, visitors, food- and wine lovers can look forward to yet another warm, hospitable Cheese Festival. This year, the 10th Vodacom Cheese Festival will be held in George from 27 to 29 July.
Again, this local fundraising event organised by parents of the Outeniqua Primary School, will endeavour to excel its fundraising cap from previous years and in doing so, plough much needed funds back into the community and the development of our children.
This popular festival will, as in the past, host a variety of events, exhibitions, entertainment and of course, cheese and wine galore to taste, enjoy and to take home for the cold winter months.
The festival highlight, the Gala Event, will not disappoint with the Barnyard Theatre presenting the Roll Over Beethoven show that promises to rock your socks, from the Beatles to Elton John to Tina Turner
Mums and Dads will be happy to hear that the Kids Area will be moved onto the school terrain amongst all the festival activities where the little ones will be occupied with age appropriate activities and supervision.
For the primary to high school children, the festival will offer cool activities like make-up and grooming sessions and entertainment events.
Those over eighteen and young at heart with a keen interest in the culinary will again have a wide spread to choose from whilst enjoying the warm hospitality of the festival.

Die Millers Prokureurs-kuiertent se kuierkosstalletjies
Vir die honger, moeë feesganger wat net lekker wil ontspan en ietsie wil eet, is die Millers Prokureurs-kuiertent die plek om te wees. Kom skop jou skoene uit en luister na ‘n verskeidenheid musiek en kunstenaars wat deurlopend sal optree. Daar is kos te kies en te keur by ons gesogte voedselstalletjies – van tradisionele kosse tot Duitse kosse, soos Bitterballen en Kroketten.
Hierdie jaar bied ons ook nuwe smake aan vir die gesondheids- en fiksheidsbewustes! Tour de Cheese
An old friend of the Vodacom Cheese Festival, Kobus Mulder, will this year again present Tour de Cheese together with Lauren Elsom, representative of Neethlingshof, who shared the stage with Kobus at last year’s festival. Neethlingshof is the main sponsor for this event and will provide the wine for the tasting sessions.
The theme this year will be “Something Sweet” with a combination of champagne and figs for one of the sessions. For the rest, festival goers will be able to learn about various combinations of cheese and wine and how to enjoy the two together as well as new taste experiences to take home and share with friends in front of the fireplace during the long winter months. Bookings are essential and the cost is R5 per session.
Academy of Whisky
Jason Duganzich, a self-confessed epicurean hedonist, will present our College of Whisky this year. Over the past seven years he has introduced many interested South Africans to the “Good Life.” Through various tastings and specialist events, he has educated people over the world of fine whisky, cognac, cigars, caviar, champagne, gin, rum, vodka and olive oil.
Through “Good life Tastings,” a company set up in early 2002, Jason has conducted tastings and training sessions for private individuals, corporates and hospitality staff. His passion for whisky in particular has made him the appointed Brand Ambassador for William Grant & Sons in South Africa. Jason has presented Whisky Master Classes for the Glenfiddich Single Malt Whisky Brand at The FNB Live Whisky Festival, both inCape Town and Johannesburg.
He has been invited as a guest speaker on local television and has conducted local radio interviews. If you are interested to learn more about fine whisky, but also cognac, cigars, caviar, champagne, gin, rum, vodka and olive oil, ensure that you attend this event at the 2012 Vodacom Cheese Festival in George. Boplaas ondersteun weereens die Kaasfees
‘n Ou bekende by die Kaasfees, Boplaas van Calitzdorp, sal weer vanjaar by die Portfolio of Port in aksie wees. Junel Vermeulen, bekende wynmeester, sal die proesessies behartig. Die Boplaas-kelder spog met talle toekennings van gesogte wynkompetisies en besoekerskanuitsien om weereens hul wyne en port te kan proe.
Die Boplaas-kelder spog met die SA kampioen, Sauvignon Blanc-rooiwyn en Port. Die Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz familie reserweversnit is in 2005 as die SA kampioen aangewys. Boplaas het oor die jare (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010) talle SA kampioene opgelewer.
Benewens die “ou” staatmakers, het Boplaas in 2009/10 hul Cool Bay-wyne bekend gestel, ‘n boetiekwyn wat fokus op die produksie van beperkte hoeveelhede premium en ultra-premium Shiraz en Sauvignon Blanc.
Boplaas is veral bekend vir hulle port en by die Kaasfees sal daar ‘n geleentheid wees om al hierdie en ook hul bekende, dekadente sjokoladeport, te proe. Besprekings is noodsaaklik en kos R5pp.

Roll Over Beethoven
This year’s entertainment at the Gala Event is not to be missed by the fun loving, rocking and young at heart!
On Friday night, 27 July 2012 at 19:30 for 20:00, Barnyard Theatre production will entertain with a rock revival in which the spirit of Beethoven appears on stage to introduce classically inspired rock numbers from the past century, traditional Irish music and snippets from great classical overtures.
The show features an 8-piece cast made up of three vocalists, keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, drums and saxophone. The musicians cover everything from Tchaikovsky to the Beatles, Queen, Michael Jackson, Elton John to Tina Turner.

Hierdie jaar skop die fees af op Vrydag 27 Julie 2012 om13:00en besoekerskanlekker kuier tot19:00wanneer die stalletjies sluit. Ons bied Vrydag ‘n spesiale toegangsfooi van slegs R30 per persoon (ook vir pensioenarisse) en R15 vir kinders onder 18.
Die fees begin Saterdag 28 Julie 2012 om 09:00 en die aktiwiteite en stalletjies sal tot 20:00 oop wees. Die kosstalletjies bly egter tot veel later oop. Toegang beloop R65 vir volwassenes, R30 vir pensioenarisse (tussen09:00en12:00) en R30 vir kinders onder 18.

Ontmoet Claude Pretorius by die Kaasfees
Claude Pretorius, nou een van Kwêla se programaanbieders, is hierdie jaar by die Kaasfees te siene in die rol van fees-seremoniemeester.
Hy is gebore en getoë in die Kaap. Hy het in die Boland op ‘n plaas grootgeword en tydens sy hoërskooldae in die Paarl sy voorliefde vir die verhoog ontdek en ontgin. As student was Claude deel van toneelgeselskappe wat die land vol getoer het met prof Pieter W. Grobbelaar se volksrevues. Dit was onder meer deel van die KKNK se hooffees.
Claude het vir ‘n paar jaar as seremoniemeester saam met die Egoli-span se padkonserte getoer. Hy het ook by verskeie feeste die rol van seremoniemeester vervul, onder andere by die KKNK-, Aardklop-, Bravo- en M.O.L-feeste. Hy was gereeld aan die stuur van sake by Die Burger en Beeld se verhoë by hierdie feeste. Die afgelope paar jaar was Claude egter agter ‘n ander mikrofoon te vinde – dié van gemeenskapsradiostasies in die Suid-Kaap – Eden FM en Suidkaap FM. Claude was ook die vermaaklikheidskoördineerder by die Garden Route Casino. Hy sing graag, maar sy voorliefde lê beslis by aanbieding.
Feeshoogtepunt – Bobby van Jaarsveld!
Bobby, ‘n SAMA-wenner en hoofrolakteur in Liefling – die Movie, tree op 29 Julie 2012 om14:00in die Millers Prokeureurs-kuiertent op. Die vertoning is gratis en dus ingesluit by die toegangsgeld wat Sondag betaalbaar is. Bring asseblief ‘n kombers saam as deel van die fees se ‘Bring-a-blanket’ gemeenskapsprojek.
Van Bobby se bekende werk is die cd’s Duisend Ure en Net vir jou. Hierdie album is in Februarie 2010 benoem vir ‘n gesogte SAMA-toekenning in die kategorie Beste Afrikaanse Pop-album. Die album is in hierdie kategorie as die wenner aangewys.
Bobby het in 2009 die hoofrol in ‘n Afrikaanse musiekrolprent, Liefling – die Movie, losgelaan. Die rolprent is vervaardig deur Hartiwood Studios en nadat dit in November 2010 uitgereik is, het dit loketrekords laat spat en na raming het sowat 460 000 mense na Liefling gekyk. Geen ander Afrikaanse fliek tot nou kon dit nog verbysteek nie.

Tydens die Wêreldbekersokkertoernooi in Suid-Afrika in 2010, is Bobby genooi om op SoccerCitydie volkslied voor die wedstryd te sing. Dit was vir hom twee hoogtepunte in sy loopbaan.Bobby is op 7 Januarie 2011 met sy skoolliefde, Annatjie, getroud en hulle het in Oktober 2011 die trotse ouers van ‘n babaseun, Sion, geword. |
Kids Zone
This year the kiddies area will be hosted at Outeniqua Primary School, the Cheese Festival premises. Supervision will be provided and age appropriate activities will be arranged for the children. Entry to the play area is free; children only have to pay the entrance fee to the festival.

Junior Chef 2012
On Saturday, 28 July 2012, a Junior Chef competition will be hosted for ages 6-9 years and 10 – 13 years. This competition will be presented by NQTACCAPE (Pty) Ltd., well-known chef school in George, in the Kids Zone. Registration fee will be R15 per child.
