Municipalities should follow Eden’s lead

CAPE TOWN – Some Eden District Municipal officials in the Western Cape said on Sunday more municipalities who face financial problems should implement strategies, through which its employees can assist in coming up with ideas to curb overspending.

The municipality launched a savings competition in August, which is aimed at improving the municipality’s dwindling finances.

Through the initiative, staff members are encouraged to generate cost saving proposals, of which the best will be selected and implemented until June 2013.

“I think we need to be accountable, we have to be responsible,’ said the municipality’s Clive Africa.

“As government officials and the custodians of the funds we receive from our taxpayers, that is the reason we need to do that.”
