Rose Lombard second in Ladies Division at SA Bodyboard Championships

1st – 6th October 2012

Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal

South Africa, 07 October 2012 – So ends another eventful South African championship, which took place this last week along the Southern Kwa-Zulu Natal coast. Last year at the SA Champs, teenage Storm Prestwich made history as the first rider to win both the Junior and Pro Titles, but this year 15 year old Boy rider Tristan Roberts smashed his way into the record books as the first ever rider to win both Boy and Pro Titles at this year’s event – a feat no-one would have believed possible a year ago.

Hermanus local, Tristan Roberts from Boland came up against seasoned Pro riders, some double his age, and beat out Terence Pieters (SKZN), Michael Ostler (CKZN) and Charles Pass (WP) in the final for the Pro Title. His consistently flawless air roll spins and backflips ensured that he was unstoppable and he won every heat in both divisions over the six days of competition.

The purpose of the contest is to highlight the talents of South African bodyboarders, promote the sport and develop the skills and competitive spirit of up-and-coming young riders. This year’s contest again highlighted those ideals with Tristan Robert’s iconic win. He is an immense talent and, with hard work and a level head, will go on to become a dominant force on the world bodyboarding stage!

The contest was held on the lower south coast beaches of Lucien and Uvongo, with waves ranging from 3 – 6 feet and consistently favourable winds, leading to some classic bodyboarding and incredible manoeuvres – making for an excellent spectator competition. Event Organiser from the hosting province Wayne Beekman said: “We were pleased with the amazing waves over the 6 days of the competition; the south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal has definitely produced the goods.” The vibe on the beach was amazing; with the riders rooting for their respective team mates and the Power Play girls keeping the riders in good spirits with Power Play Energy Drinks.

After an awesome display of team and provincial spirit, Central Kwa-Zulu Natal won the coveted Fishman Trophy but each province was proudly represented in the divisions and the spirit of the contest ensured that each province had riders to root for throughout the SA Championships.
