SWD THRASED WESTERN PROVINCE
South Western Districts kicked off the 2012/13 on a high after they demolished Western Province within two days in the Cricket South Africa Provincial Three Day Competition match that was played at the Recreation Ground in Oudtshoorn the past weekend.
SWD, who wrapped up the match just before tea on the second afternoon, won by an innings and 54 runs but the match will be remembered for the outstanding bowling performance by the 19 year-old debutant, Marcello Piedt. Piedt, who represented SA Schools in 2011 and was a member of the SWD Academy during the winter of 2012 bowled like a machine in the WP second innings and finished with figures of 10-5-6-7 – the fourth best performance for a bowler on debut in the history of South African first class cricket.
Western Province, who were put in to bat, were bowled out for 141 runs in their first inning with only Bradley Barnes (41) that offered resistance. Piedt (2/32), Phabhama Fojela (2/9) and Ross McMillan (3/16) were the wicket takers for the home team. SWD, thanks to a partnership of 98 runs for the third wicket between Adrian McLaren (67; 119 balls, 1×6, 9×4) and Christiaan Jonker (41; 69 balls, 6×4) made 229 runs in their first innings. Brendon Louw (36; 46 balls, 6×4) made an important contribution to ensure SWD with a lead 88 runs.
The Western Province second innings was catastrophic with only 15 runs on the board with nine wickets already down before they were eventually dismissed for only 34. The limited overs fixture, that was scheduled for Saturday, was abandoned without any play after heavy rainfalls interrupted the match.
SWD’s next match is against Boland in Paarl (1-4 November 2012).
