SWD FIGHT BACK AGAINST EP IN THREE DAY MATCH

The SWD senior cricket team fought back remarkably and came close to a sensational victory in the CSA Provincial Three Day Challenge the past weekend. The SWD, who locked horns with a very strong Eastern Province team at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn had a disappointing start to the Three Day match but were eventually denied victory when bad light had the final say on the third day.

EP, who won the toss and batted first, posted 360. Leroy Walters (90) and Arno Jacobs (78) were the main contributors with the bat. Gurshwin Rabie (3/87) was SWD’s most successful bowler. SWD, in return, failed dismally and were dismissed for only 129 in their first innings. Captain, Ross McMillan (61) was the top scorer whilst Warren Bell (7/56) achieved a career best with the ball.

SWD, who were requested to follow-on with a deficit of 231 scored a much improved 411 with Waldo Lategan (85), Luthando Mnyanda (70), Glen Addicot (69) and Ross McMillan (69) the top run scorers.

EP, who were set a target a target of 181, were in deep trouble when bad light stopped play at 126/8. Marcello Piedt (4/41), together with Gurshwin Rabie (2/36) were both in aggressive form.

SWD DEFEAT EP IN ONE DAY MATCH

The SWD cricket team were in awesome form on Sunday when they defeated Eastern Province by 50 runs in a CSA Provincial One Day match that was played at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn.

The men from the Southern Cape, who won the toss and elected to bat first, posted a record breaking 309/6 in their allotted 50 overs with Glen Addicot top score with 82. He was well supported by Waldo Lategan 44* and Adrian McLaren 42.

The massive target was just a bridge too far for the EP team and only Kelly Smuts 71 was threatening with the bat.

SWDCB PREMIER LEAGUE RESULTS

The unbeaten defending champions, Union Stars and Mossel Bay consolidated their positions at the SWD Cricket Board premier league after they recorded comprehensive victories the past weekend.

Mossel Bay (168 all out) defeated the struggling Pirates United (59 all out) by 109 runs whilst Union Stars recovered from 128/8 and made 203 to beat Ramblers (107) by 96 runs. Sussex recorded their first victory of the season when they beat Pacaltsdorp United by 5 wickets. The match between George and Harlequins was abandoned due to wet conditions.

The SWD league competition will continue this weekend and with all provincial players available to play for their clubs some exciting contests are on the cards.

George, who were unexpectedly beaten by Mossel Bay earlier in the season will be hosting this vital fixture at Rooivivier-rift. Pacaltsdorp United, who is still without a victory will play Ramblers at home whilst Union Stars will travel to D’Almeida where they will take on Sussex. Harlequins Forces will be on full strength when they take on Pirates United at the Military Sport Club. The defending champions Union Stars and Harlequins are the only two undefeated teams in the competition.

Mayflower Cricket Club recorded a surprising nail biting victory of 1 wicket against Knysna Cavaliers in the SWD Cricket Board Promotion League competition the past week. Mayflower (127/9), who are based at Great Brak River, successfully chased down the set target of 123 runs posted by Knysna who were relegated to the Promotion League this season.

Riversdale, who posted a massive total of 327 beat Hartenbos (108 all out) by 219 runs whilst Western Hope (226) defeated Ladismith (112) by 114 runs.

USSA B WEEK — 26-30 NOVEMBER 2012 (GEORGE AND OUDTSHOORN)

The SWD Cricket Board will host the annual USSA (University’s) B week in Oudtshoorn and George next week. The tournaments stretches from Monday to Friday and fourteen teams will participate in two sections. Finals and play off matches will be played on Friday. Fourteen teams, from tertiary institutions in South Africa, will participate in the tournament.

NMMU George, who has the services of Kobus Scholtz, Lyndon Volkwyn and Bronwill Goeda, who all played first class cricket for SWD as well as Bradley Carolus (SWD Academy and U/19) will hope to be victorious in the A-section and be promoted to the A week next year.
