SWD VS BORDER
The SWD senior cricket team jumped to the 3rd place of the CSA Provincial Three Day competition log after they recorded their third consecutive victory by an innings. The men from the Southern Cape defeated Border within the space of two days and are now on 63.5 points – behind Eastern Province (66.80) and Boland (65.20) – all after six matches.
At the match that was played at Fort Hare in Alice, SWD won the toss and were soon in trouble at 49/5. Waldo Lategan (34) played a vital innings but it was Pieter Stuurman (101) and Brendon Louw (101) who scored his maiden first class hundred that enable the visitors to score 327 (all out). Marcello Piedt (7/24) continued his brilliant from with the ball. He received good support from Wessel Hartslief (3/36) as Border was dismissed for only 88. In their follow-on innings they managed to score 181 with Phaphama Fojela (4/48) the pick of the bowlers as SWD emerged winners by an innings and 80 runs.
• SWD had a disappointing performance in the limited over match as they were dismissed for only 92 runs. Border was victorious by 7 wickets and will play Free State in the final in Bloemfontein this weekend.
LEAGUE FIXTURES
The cricket program in the SWD will continue this weekend after the break for the festive season.
The SWD U/19 team will play Western Province as from Friday on the REC in Oudtshoorn in the CSA Provincial Three Day Competition. The SWD squad for the weekend is: Ruan Stander (captain), Larnell Spies, Jean Heunis, Luther van der Horst, Bjorn-Jay Rossouw, Stepan Gouws, Josh Peters, Lance Roelfse, Dillon Moos, Arno Moolman, Richard Maree, Chris Marrow, Emile Titus and Thomas Marrow.
The SWD Women’s team will travel to Paarl and Cape Town respectively where they will take on Boland (on Saturday) and Western Province (on Sunday). The SWD will be hoping for a victory in at least one of the two matches as both provinces will be without representation of their national players who are on tour in the West Indies.
The SWD league competition will also proceed this weekend.
