Benedict and Cornelia 2013 SA Marathon Champions

The winner of the SA Marathon Championships, Benedict Moeng (Gauteng-North).

The thirty year old Benedict Moeng from Gauteng-North caused a major upset when he won the SA Marathon title in Oudtshoorn on Sunday. A relatively small field of 109 athletes completed the race that was presented by Athletics South Western Districts. Moeng clinched the gold medal with a winning time of 2:17:28, more than two minutes faster than Lucky Mohale (2:19:38) from Central Gauteng.

The newly crowned champion was understandably surprised and elated after a perfect race in which he defeated the race favourite, Coolboy Ngamole (Central Gauteng) who finished third with a time of 2:21:31. Moeng will now be a strong candidate to be selected for the World Championships in Moscow in August.

The winner of the Women’s category of the SA Marathon Championships, Cornelia Joubert (Gauteng-South).

Cornelia Joubert (Central Gauteng), who ran her first marathon, took the honours in the women’s category with a time of 2:46:13. Her team mate, Kim Laxton (2:47:25) finished second and Melanie van Rooyen (KwaZulu Natal) third with a time of 2:48:35.

Zandizile Ngeva (2:32:24) was the best local athlete and finished 24’th overall in the men’s race whilst Helga Matthee (3:12:02) was the best SWD women – 76^‘thoverall.

Gauteng-North won the team competition in the open men’s category whilst KwaZulu Natal surprisingly walked away with the honours in the open women’s team competition.

The Oudtshoorn Municipality financially contributed R50,000 in support of this major sport events as part of their vision to establish Oudtshoorn as the sports mecca of the Southern Cape and Karoo. According to the Executive Mayor, Councilor Gordon April It is also a tool to advertise sport facilities to sport federations in order for them to have their future events in Oudtshoorn. One of the benefits of hosting these kind of events in Oudtshoorn, is the economic injection that the town is benefiting from. It is also a tool to build god and strong relationships between the municipality and the sport federations.
