Former senior municipal officials in the Western Cape towns of Oudtshoorn, Stellenbosch and George face the possibility of prosecution after the Special Investigating Unit, investigating corruption and maladministration, found that millions had been wasted, according to a report in The Times.

It says reports on the Stellenbosch and George municipalities will soon be given to President Jacob Zuma. In its preliminary report on Oudtshoorn, the investigating unit highlighted that former municipal manager Noel Pietersen had failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the ‘irregular expenditure’ of R7m, exposing the municipality to a R2m civil claim. The services of an IT company had been procured at an inflated cost of between R6.5m and R8.4m over a five-year period, the report said.
