The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) says frozen vegetable retail company McCain, is not telling the truth about the reason why it wants to close its plant in George in the Southern Cape.
About 1 550 jobs could be lost.
McCain says it’s decided to centralise its operations in Gauteng.
“We are worried that this might be in preparation for a transaction that it is speculated will take place in which McCains will be bought by another company, that really gives us worries and we will be approaching competition authorities in order to exercise our rights” said FAWU General Secretary, Katishi Masemola.
Concerned worker says “financially it will affect me and my family, personally it’s been good working for McCain for me, I started here about 12 years ago; but at the end of the day it’s sad, but there is nothing I can do”
