South Africa: Grassroots entrepreneurs making change in their communities

sparkThis week, eighteen emerging South African leaders will meet in Johannesburg with Spark* South Africa to take part in an intensive five-day workshop designed to help them develop and grow their own community development projects.

Spark* South Africa promotes ‘local solutions to local problems’ and each year they search for the most exciting leaders with early ideas to bring change to challenging communities. Aaron Tait, the global CEO of Spark* International is excited to be returning to South Africa as one of the facilitators, joining with the local team. ‘It is always inspiring to work alongside the South African Changemakers, and watching as they turn their ideas into projects that change lives’.

The ‘Accelerator’, as the intensive workshop is called, brings the 2013 Changemakers together for five days packed full of social entrepreneurship training and strategy, culminating in a public event on Friday the 3rd of May at Hub Johannesburg where they share their community projects with an invited audience. The stakes are high on this day with the audience voting for the 2013 Changemaker of the Year, a prestigious award which also comes with funding for their project and support from a group of marketing, development and business experts. Beyond the Accelerator all of the Changemakers continue to receive support from Spark* and can access funding for their projects through the crowd-funding site www.sparkinternational.org which allows people across the world to fund and follow their projects.

The 2012 Spark* South Africa Changemakers have already gone on to lead inspiring change, creating 40 jobs and providing education support to 812 at risk children. This year’s Changemakers look equally as promising and have been selected from 120 applicants across the country.
