Cape Town – Former Springbok fullback Bevin Fortuin has been appointed as the new head coach of the South Western Districts Eagles.  According to Die Burger, this announcement was made by the SWD Rugby Union on Monday.  Fortuin, 34, was picked ahead of other more experienced candidates. One of them is Griquas’ assistant coach, Abré Minnie, who was expected to get the role.  However, according to the union’s CEO, Johan Prinsloo, the decision to appoint Fortuin is more beneficial for SWD rugby.

“Bevin played at a high level. His presentation was very good and he knows the union and the players. We weighed him up against more experienced candidates and also took their results as coaches into consideration,” said Prinsloo.

“Previous coaches who had success here, like Heyneke Meyer ans Frans Ludeke, were also not very experienced at the time.”

Fortuin, who represented SWD and the Free State Cheetahs, played two Tests for the Springboks in 2006 and 2007. He will have a tough job on his hands in his new role though, as the Eagles won only one out of seven matches to finish sixth in the Vodacom Cup’s Southern Section.

Prinsloo also confirmed that Fortuin’s contract is subjected to a performance clause.
