West Beach Warfare Bodyboarding Contest

Port Alfred, South Africa

17th July 2013, Port Alfred – Port Alfred once again will host a SABA (South African Bodyboarding Association) event at the widely respected, heaving wedges associated with West Beach – supplying the event with the fitting title of “West Beach Warfare.”

Port Alfred is a small town situated along the Sunshine Coast approximately halfway between Port Elizabeth and East London. The last time a SABA bodyboarding event was run in the town was back in 2001. The contest at West Beach is finally back and is planned to be run for years to come!

The event will take place from the 9th – 11th August and will be a great event for spectators to come down and watch some of the best extreme sports professionals of all ages battle it out at West Beach.  The event is open to all ages, starting from u/14 Boys up to Grand Masters. Those riders who have ridden this wave will understand what it could potentially off up to them. The wave is ideally a left breaking wedge, with raw open ocean power behind it, and provides the perfect opportunity for riders to push the limits and put everything on the line to become the champion of West Beach.

Organisers are proud to announce that the event will be a 4A Rated SABA event, held over the long weekend in August (9th – 11th) 2013. The event will be the final instalment of the 2013 bodyboarding season, and will valuable ranking points for the SABA circuit, West Beach Warfare is the final opportunity for South Africa’s top riders to improve their positions in the rankings – so it is sure to attract some hot talent. Former South African Champion and World Tour competitor, Mark McCarthy will be competing in the event and had the following to say: “Could not think of a better place to end the SABA tour! South Africa’s best left wedge.”

Event organisers are really happy with the buy-in from the South African bodyboarding community for this event and are really excited to have some of the top riders travelling to Port Alfred for the event. Some names to look out for at the contest include: 16-year-old Tristan Roberts from Hermanus, who is the current South African Bodyboarding Pro and Boys division champion. Dylan van Tonder, from just down the road in Port Elizabeth, is current back-to-back South African Drop Knee champion.

Iain Campbell from Durban, the current International Surfing Association World Drop Knee champion, recently crowned “King of the Wedge”, who currently tops the SABA Drop Knee ranking and is second in the current Pro rankings just behind Mark McCarthy. “The event has been on the cards for many years and it’s amazing that the guys have got this event together. Can’t wait to see all the guys and girls down there for this event. Good luck to all” said Iain.
