AfriForum making their mark in the Western Cape

afriforumAfter a very successful year across the country, and especially in the Western Cape, AfriForum has decided to go even bigger.  During a meeting with community leaders in the civic centre in Hermanus, AfriForum has agreed to establish a branch in the Overstrand area.  The 144 members of the former De Mond branch have been transferred to the new branch at Overstrand. Marianne Roussouw was appointed as interim Chair.

The keynote speaker was Pieter Rautenbach, Head of Local Government Affairs at the AfriForum head office in Pretoria. Rautenbach informed residents that AfriForum’s membership increased from about 30 000 members to 66 000 members in 2013.  120 branches have been established across the country.

Roussouw said that any municipality or police station can perform better if an effective civil rights organisation fulfils a watchdog function.  “AfriForum is not aligned with any political party, and will not hesitate to stand against injustices,” Roussouw said.

The escalation of crime in the Overstrand area, the alleged influx of squatters, the management of this influx in terms of legislation, the qualified audit of the Municipality and sewage spills have been identified as issues AfriForum will handle.

Members of the public who want to support the case and who want to join, may SMS “Overstrand” to 31336 (50c/SMS).
