‘I want to sing that rock and roll
I want to ‘lectrify my soul
‘Cause everybody been making a shout
So big and loud, been drownin’ me out
I want to sing that rock and roll’
– Gillian Welch
Lucy Kruger and Jonathan Velthuysen (as The Hollow Body) will be taking their singular brand of alternative folk on the road this month, in a tour that will see them each perform their individual fan favourites, as well as a few brand new collaborations.
Lucy Kruger has been writing and performing her own material for six years and has in the past had the pleasure to open for international acts such as Linton Kwezi Johnson (LKJ), Xavier Rudd and Shawn Phillips. She was recently (June 2013) awarded a prestigious Standard Bank Ovation Award for her shows at The National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and also numbered among the emerging artists chosen for the Big Issue ‘Young blood, fresh talent’ survey. This inspiring young artist has taken the notoriously hardnosed South African music scene by storm with her fresh take on indie/alternative rock – a sound which is rooted in a rich tapestry of skilful, versatile vocals bolstered by soulful melodies.
The Hollow Body is the moniker for multi-instrumentalist musician and songwriter Jonathan Velthuysen, under which he released his latest album entitled ‘Johannine’. Born and bred in South Africa, Jonathan moved to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland to study traditional Gaelic music in 2006, which was followed by extensive travelling, a return to RSA and a short-lived, yet fruitful collaboration on a project called ‘Stepdog’, which was received extremely well among local audiences. Jonathan has since started work as a luthier (guitar builder) with the Stellenbosch Guitar Company and now performs as The Hollow Body. He is a veteran of the festival scene, including RAKA, RAMfest, Hazenvlackte, Synergy, Bastille Fest, Woordfees and more, and has been invited to the STRAB Festival in Mozambique in 2014.
The Rock ‘n Roll tour kicks off in Johannesburg on the 16th of October 2013 and will wind its way through Gauteng and Natal for 10 days, stopping in the Midlands on the October 26th before culminating in Cape Town at The Waiting Room on the 5th of November.
