After two consecutive defeats in the Cricket South Africa Provincial Three Day competition the SWD cricket team is facing Griqualand West this weekend in an important match at the REC in Oudtshoorn.
Only a resounding victory will be enough the get the men from the Southern Cape away from the second last position on the log. Their biggest downfall is the inability of the batting unit to build a good first innings total. The lack of good first innings scores cost them this season and the recent defeats are due to a lack of proper momentum.
The team also suffered three serious draw backs. Their main strike bowler, Gurshwin Rabie was called-up to the Chevrolet Warriors for their Sunfoil series match this weekend whilst Glen Addicot (side strain) and Waldo Lategan (back muscle spasms) forced them out of the team for the weekend. The experienced Pieter Stuurman, who was very impressed with the bat in the one day match against Easterns the past weekend is back in the team whilst the 19-year old NMMU student, Hanno Kotze, will make his first class debut. Lyndon Volkwyn will replace Rabie.
The SWD-team for the weekend is: Ross McMillan (capt), Luthando Mnyanda, Adrian McLaren, Hanno Kotze, Pieter Stuurman, Brendon Louw, Sammy-Joe Avontuur, Glenton Stuurman, Marcello Piedt, Lonwabo Rodolo and Lyndon Volkwyn. Kobus Scholtz and Gareth Dukes will be added to the one day squad.
The Griqua Diamond squad is: Zakir Kathrada, Jan Frylink, Jandre Coetzee, Aubrey Swanepoel, Aloysius Seleka, Corbyn Dolley, Jan Hendrick Steenkamp, Alan Kruger, Diego Rosier, Gerhardt Abrahams, Ayavuya Myoli. Reggie Modise and Griffin Nieuwoudt.
