THE Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Inland batsmen went on the rampage on the opening day of the Cricket South Africa (CSA) under-17 week at Stellenbosch on Friday.
Gauteng piled up 359/4 declared in 60 overs, having been given a good start by Liam Smith (109). Delano Potgieter then took the Border attack apart as he blasted his way to an unbeaten 103 off 61 balls. He received good support from Martyn Strydom (81) who also had a strike rate well in excess of 100 percent.
Potgieter continued his good form when he took 3/8 in the Border first innings as they crumbled to 104 all out. They did, however, manage to avoid an outright defeat.
Jason Marshall (140) and Brandan Tattam (93*) were the stars as KZN Inland posted 284/2 declared in 65 overs against Easterns. The latter declared well in arrears but were not able to achieve a come-from-behind victory.
Brendan Owen (108*) played a fine innings to enable Eastern Province to chase down a total in excess of 250 and give his side a first innings victory over the KZN Coastal team while Eldin Rossouw played a captain’s innings of 107 to earn SWD a creditable draw against Northerns.
Vian Maritz also played a fine innings of 73 not out to enable North West to score a first innings win over Western Province.
