This past weekend Athletics SWD and PetroSA held a small appreciation function to thank some of the major role-players in this year’s PetroSA Marathon that was held in September 2013.

This year was the first year that Athletics SWD presented the PetroSA Marathon. We had a record amount of entries and for the next two years, we want to grow this event even not only in numbers, but also in quality and status. We have already started with lifting the status to an international level – all three distances (10km, 21.1km and 42.2km) are A.I.M.S. Certified routes. The event already attracts a lot of neighboring African countries and next year want to have even more entries from abroad and also top quality local South African runners. Our official Press Conference will be in February 2014 were all the new strategies will be announced.

Supporting the local community of Mossel Bay, we decided to give a donation of R5,000 to Benevolent Park Old Age home – thank you to Maevia Du Plessis and Glynes Flores for attending our function and also for all your fantastic work that you do on a daily basis.

We would also like to thank VW Mossel Bay (André Verwey and Bennie Durandt) for their wonderful contribution to the success of the 2013 event – assisting is with various logistical challenges during the event.

A big word of thanks goes to the Mossel Bay Municipality and the Sports Festival – with their major contribution in venue, traffic and safely logistics etc, it would not of been possible. Thank to Mayor Ferreira, Dr. Gratz, Councillor Petru Terblanche, Mr. Purin (Community Services), Ms Antoinette Snyders (Traffic Department) and Mr Arthur Pekeur from the Provincial Traffic Department.

The biggest thank you goes to Russel Mambolo and his team from PetroSA for affording us the opportunity to present this event, and with the next two years we will make sure to grow this event from strength to strength.
