Algoa FM has partnered with the Sustainable Seas Trust on an initiative that calls for all professional, amateur and youth/scholar photographers to enter their photos in the SST photo competition. The best photo in each of the categories will be featured in a coffee table book called the Splendours of South African Seas. People are allowed to enter photos of anything that celebrates the seas; marine life, sea landscapes, history & culture of our coasts and sport & recreational use of our beaches and seas.
“We are convinced that this initiative will provide a positive boost to conservation and rehabilitation of the marine environment as well as promote public support as one cannot take photographs of our beautiful South Africa and not become a more active campaigner”, says Tony Ribbink, CEO of Sustainable Seas Trust.
“The Southern Cape is such a wonderfully scenic location inhabited by a community that has a true appreciation of their environment. We hope that our support will promote that message of appreciation and help in conserving the environment”, says Jennilee Peremore, PR and CSI Manager of Algoa FM.
“The initiative forms part of our conservation and education campaign celebrating South Africa in its 20th year of democracy”, says Ribbink.
The book will be launched in Cape Town during Marine Week (October) 2014, in association with Bird Life South Africa, at their annual International Marine Photographic Competition. The best photographs of the SST competition will be considered for the display of the Bird Life SA Save Our Seabirds Festival.
The winners in the professional and hobbyist category will each win a R10 000 cash prize with the winner in the youth category walking away with a R7000 cash prize.
In addition to the main prizes, several bonus prizes from sponsors will be offered, such as ‘Viewers’ Choice winning photo’ and a ‘Choose a Title for the book’ winner. Closing date for entries is 1 February 2014.
