Ultimate Sports Nutrition (USN)’s popular mountain biking MTB Cup Series is set to kick off the New Year in style with the first race of 2014 taking place at The Big Red Barn in Midrand, Gauteng, on Saturday, 18 January.
The Big Red Barn route, which is situated next to a 20 acre eucalyptus forest, is renowned for its wide range of breath taking routes that cater for riders of all levels and disciplines. From single track, technical climbs and sufficient opportunity for overtaking, the race is poised to get the season off to an exciting start.
Andrew Grobler, Race Director and Event Organiser says, “We are very excited to begin the infamous USN MTB Cup at such a beautiful venue. We are expecting around 1 200 enthusiastic riders, from weekend warriors to elite professional riders to take part in the race this Saturday.”
Cyclists will have three different race options – 10km family ride, 30km and 50km. There is also a kiddie’s race for young and aspiring riders, which for the 2014 series is free. The various routes have been designed to take advantage of the spectacular scenery, while incorporating some of the most exciting riding terrains that the series has to offer. There will be one short stretch of district road halfway through the 30km ride and 371m climbing, whereas the 50km route is relatively flat and fast with 576m of climbing.
Arno Du Toit (ASG Cycling Academy), the men’s winner of the 2013 USN MTB Cup Series, is also participating in this year’s series again, “I thoroughly enjoyed The USN MTB Series last year and it has certainly become the highlight of the year for the domestic calendar. I am looking forward to tackling more of the scenic tracks South Africa has to offer again this year.”
As per the previous races, SASeeding will continue to be used, meaning cyclists will be able to build on the seeding they have acquired from other events.
Entries for the USN MTB Cup Series event #1 are open until 23:00pm on 15 January 2014. Upon registering, individuals can collect their race numbers from the Epic Sports Cycle shop in Centurion on Friday, 17 January from 9:00am – 16:00pm. Numbers can also be collected on the morning of the race at the Big Red Barn from 6:00am.
