The SWD senior cricket team will be under huge pressure when they travel to Cape Town this weekend where they will take on the log leaders in the CSA Provincial Three Day competition at the PP Smith oval in Bellville starting on Thursday.
In the three day competition the team of Ross McMillan is having their most disappointing season since the current format was introduced. They are currently inthe 13th position (out of 14) at 58.98 bonus points after eight matches in which they only recorded two outright victories. Western Province is the log leaders at 133.66 points after 10 matches. Ironically, SWD recorded outright victories in the last three first class matches that were played between the two teams.
SWD, who won their opening T20 match with a bonus points against Eastern Province two weeks ago will be very motivated to keep their hopes for a title on track and they will need to be clinical in Sunday’s T20 clash.
The selectors kept a conservative approach and only made one change – to each of the three and T20 teams. The 26-year old Siviwe Gidana was brought in from Eastern Province and he will bolster the SWD bowling attack for the rest of the season.
The SWD team for the Three Day match is: Ross McMillan (capt), Waldo Lategan, Luthando Mnyanda, Glen Addicot, Sammy-Joe Avontuur, Pieter Stuurman, Brendon Louw, Siviwe Gidana, Douglas Baartman, Lyndon Volkwyn and Gurshwin Rabie. Adrian McLaren and Gareth Dukes will be added to the squad for Sunday’s T20 match.
