The Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2013 and Terra del Capo Pinot Grigio 2013are the perfect summer wines to savour whilst making the most of the warmer weather.
The Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2013 forms part of the Cape of Good Hope range, terroir-specific wines created in recognition of South Africa’s 350-year-old vinous heritage. The first vintage was launched in 2010, as a result of the Old Vines Initiative. This initiative was introduced by Johann Rupert who took on the wine mantle of the Rupert family following the untimely death of his brother, renowned winemaker Anthonij, in 2001.
Winemaker Mark van Buuren describes this wine as displaying appealing tropical fig and pear aromas with granadilla and lemon zest, adding brightness and vivacity, with exquisite ripe tropical flavours in the mouth. The fig, gooseberry, granadilla and lemon zest come though beautifully, resulting in a vibrant and lively wine with well integrated acidity. The palate is textured and round with good mouth feel, allowing the wine to finish on a light, dry, flinty note.
The Cape of Good Hope Altima Sauvignon Blanc 2013 at R95.00 per bottle is available from the farm and in selected wine outlets throughout South Africa. It is the perfect wine to enjoy, on its own or partnered with foods such as Scallop Ceviche and an Avocado and Tomato Dressing, Sushi, Sticky Pork Ribs with Lime, Chilli and Ginger, Baked Chevre with Salad Greens or Succulent Sautéed Prawns Served with Grilled Lemon and a Toasted Sesame Seed Dressing. Last year this wine was selected as one of the Top 10 Sauvignon Blancs in South Africa at the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Challenge.
An Italian style varietal, the Terra del Capo Pinot Grigio 2013 is the ultimate food-friendly wine. It was developed by the late Anthonij Rupert, who not only believed that South African soils were well suited to growing Italian grape varietals, but also had a love for Italy and the natural synergy between good food and wine.
“The perfect summer tipple”, as Mark describes the wine, is available in a screw cap bottle. It displays aromas of tangy light peach and golden apple with a hint of stone fruit and floral aromas. The palate is equally light with a brush of honeysuckle richness with the vibrancy of freshly grated lime zest. Perfect for the summer, and as a food-friendly wine, it is best enjoyed with a Grilled Squid Salad and Celery Leaf Pesto, Orzo Risotto with Buttery Shrimp or Spaghetti with Lemon, Chilli and Creamy Spinach.
Available directly from the farm or select wine outlets, the Terra del Capo Pinot Grigio 2013 retails for approximately R60 per bottle.
