Athletes urged to bear safety in mind while training

adt_a_tyco_business-logoMarch and April are big event months for cyclists and runners with the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Momentum Cycle Tour and the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon respectively.

As race days draw closer, avid athletes will no doubt be going the extra mile to ensure that they are fit and ready. This may mean squeezing in additional training – possibly in the early morning or in the evening.

Martin Kriel, Managing Director of ADT Security East Coast Region said training is important; but so is your safety.

“It is very important to let someone know that you are heading out and when you expect you will return. This means that if you are not home as scheduled, the alarm can be raised immediately and no time will be wasted in the event of an emergency.”

He further had these tips for anyone who will be taking part in any kind of athletic training in the coming weeks:

–       Try to avoid running or cycling when it is dark outside.

–       Do not go out jogging or cycling alone; invite family or friends to go with you.

–       Before you leave home ensure that your cell phone battery is charged.

–       Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or taxi or make a phone call if needs be.

–       Wear bright reflective clothing so that motorists are able to see you easily; reflective strips on your shoes are not sufficient.

–       Never go out running or cycling while listening to music through earphones. This might prevent you from hearing an oncoming vehicle, a potential mugger or a vicious dog.

–       Vary your route as often as you can and steer clear of very quiet areas.

Kriel added that it is also important to make sure your family and home are safe while you are out, even if it is just for an hour or two. “Activate the alarm system and always ensure that you have locked the front door and gates properly behind you.”
