SWD Cricket win, lose vs KZN in Durban

The SWD Cricket team had mixed successes during the previous weekend encounters with KwaZulu Natal in the CSA Provincial Challenge competition.  In the matches that were played in Durban KwaZulu Natal won a nail-biting contest in the Twenty20 by 12 runs whilst SWD were victorious by 110 runs in the Three Day match. 

In the three day match the SWD thanks to Christiaan Jonker (55) and Glen Addicot (38) posted 238 runs in their first innings.  Thanks to a brilliant bowling performance by Gurshwin Rabie (6/43) and Lyndon Volkwyn (4/23) the home team was dismissed for only 68 runs in their first innings.  SWD with a lead of 170 runs opted to not enforce the follow-on.

In their second innings SWD thanks to an opening stand of 80 runs between Ross McMillan (32) and Sammy-Joe Avontuur (39) but collapsed and were dismissed for only 166.  Luthando Mnyanda (51*) however played an important innings to allow SWD to set a target of 337 to KZN. Darryn Smit ended with a career best performance of 7/27.  Mishkal Ramsaroop (88) made a good contribution but the bowling attack of Volkwyn (3/32), Douglas Baartman (2/23) and Ross McMillan (2/18) restricted KZN to 226 all out – for a victory of 110 runs.

Gurshwin Rabie, who bagged 7 wickets in the match, for the second time in his career surpassed 50 first class wickets in the season.  With 57 wickets, he is currently the leading wicket taker in the competition. 

In the T20 match it were the two Dolphins franchise heroes – Darryn Smit (57; 41 balls, 2×6, 3×4) and Cameron Delport (35; 25 balls, 1×6, 5×4) – who paved the way for a score of 169/7.  Luthando Mnyanda (4/26 in 3 overs) was SWD’s most successful bowler.  SWD (157/6) fall 12 runs short of the target.  Ross McMillan (76; 56 balls, 4×6, 6×4) who concluded the T20 season with 324 runs at an average of 108 was again the batting hero.  Sammy-Joe Avontuur (42; 27 balls, 1×6, 4×4) also made a significant contribution.

SWD captain Ross McMillan is in a good position to finish the Cricket South Africa Twenty20 competition as the top run scorer and batsman with the best average. McMillan scored 324 runs at an average of 108; in the second place is Matthew Hullet of KwaZulu Natal Inland at 212 runs with one more match to play (for Hullet). McMillan is also the most economical bowler in the CSA Provincial Three Day Competition of an average of 2.22 runs per over – he bagged 22 wickets in the season.
