De Krans The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port and Cape Tawny Port, meet the ‘Heavyweights’

De Krans Wine Cellar, situated in Calitzdorp along the world famous Route 62, has established itself as one of South Africa’s leading port producers.  The ports range from the traditional to modern, catering for all palates throughout the year.

Ensuring that the wines remains consistent yet innovative, De Krans has, over the years been acknowledged in the industry, accumulating more than 600 medals and awards since 1980. These include 5-star ratings year on year in the authoritative and internationally recognized Platter’s South African Wine Guide. Two of the award-winning ports which continue to keep the brand top of mind are the ‘heavyweights’ of De Krans, namely The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 and Cape Tawny Port. The most recent accolades to be awarded to The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010, which has just been released, were a 5-star rating in the 2014 Platter’s South African Wine Guide, as well as Veritas and Michelangelo gold awards in 2013. This is the 8th consecutive 5-star rating for a De Krans port; a major industry milestone indeed. The Cape Tawny Port boasts a Platter 4½ star rating in the 2014 Platter’s South African Wine Guide, a double gold medal and Grand Prix Runner-up at the 2006 Michelangelo International Wine Awards.

What makes The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 a real collector’s item, is the fact that it is the last port in the De Krans portfolio to be labeled with the word ‘Port’. The bottles were labeled ahead of the 31 December 2011 deadline as agreed on by the South African government and EU, as bottles labeled after this date were no longer allowed to use the word ‘Port’.

This flagship port of De Krans is best described as having a vibrant plum colour, with dense aromas of prune, spice and tobacco, with the potential to mature for a further 20 to 30 years.  A fleshy, chewy mouthful of flavours, showing tannic grip, concentrated red fruit nuances, and a firm structure ensuring considerable longevity. Retailing for approximately R240per bottle, savour this premium port on its own, or serve with stronger cheeses.

The Cape Tawny Port delivers superior consistency with each vintage. Living up to its reputation of being a stalwart, this port has a beautiful coppery-gold colour, displaying flavours of coffee, toffee, hazelnut and cinnamon spice, as well as a hint of raisins in the background and a good, long finish and excellent grip. Best enjoyed with a hearty brown onion soup, coffee and chocolates, the port retails for approximately R120 per bottle.
