Its once again that time of year where Athletics SWD invest in the local talent with the ASWD Development Series that takes place in Knysna during the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival. Here are some information regarding the various projects:
Monday 7 July 2014: Cross Country League – The event will be held at Steenbok Park on Leisure Island in Knysna. Registration will be at 08:00 and the official first race will start at 10:00. Our program caters for 9 year olds to Grand Masters with all the various distances. This is our flag ship event of the series and we hope to attract a large field of athletes from our province. All athletes will receive participation medals and there is also prize money available for the first 3 positions in each category.
Later this year Athletics SWD will host the Western Cape Championships (30 Aug) and the ASA National Cross Country Championships (13 Sep) in Pacaltsdorp. With this in mind we would like to give our athletes the best opportunity possible to participate and qualify for the various provincial teams.
Monday 7 July 2014: Relay Races – This year the relays will be run on Leisure Island. Registration will be at Steenbok Park from 13:00. The first race will start at 15:00. Our program consist of 5 different races starting off with the 4 x 500m for 11 yrs, then 4 x 500m for 13 yrs, 4 x 1km for 15 yrs, 4 x 1km for 17 yrs and lastly the 4 x 1km for Junior and Senior athletes. The first 9 teams (3 Male / 3 Female/ 3 Mix) per race will receive participation medals. Loads of lucky draw prizes available.
Wednesday 9 July 2014: 5km and 10km Road Race – For the first time these race will be held at the same time at the Oyster Festival sport grounds in Waterfront Drive. Registration will be from 12:00 and the gun will fire at 14:00. All athletes completing the race within the cut-off time will receive a participation medal. Prize Money available for the 10km and lucky draw prizes.
Thursday 10 July 2014: Street Miles – Finishing off our series on a highlight with various Street Miles in George Rex Drive in Knysna. Registration will be at the Knysna Marathon Club House from 13:00. The first race will start at 15:00 in George Rex Drive. We have 5 races in our program, starting with the 11yrs, 13yrs, 15yrs, 17yrs and then finish with the Junior and Senior race. The first 70 athletes per race will receive participation medals and there is prize money available for the first 3 positions in each race.
As part of our Development Program all SWD school going and club junior athletes (aged 9 to 19) will receive FREE entry to these races. Co-ordination meetings were held with the schools from Knysna and George and various aspects like meals and transport etc were finalized. Without our partners we will not be able to host these events and we would like to thank the following role-players in advance for their part in the series – NLDTF, Knysna Marathon Club, WC DCAS (CDP), Top Gear, DECTI, SynerG and Dynaforce.
