Having established itself as one of the leading port producers in South Africa and abroad, De Krans Wine Cellar, situated in Calitzdorp along the world famous Route 62, is also home to a range of superb Value-for-Money wines. These include the new release De Krans Chardonnay 2013, Tinta Barocca Rosé 2014 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. Displaying a brand-new label, all three wines are Origin of Calitzdorp, allowing the winemaker to have a hands-on approach from the grape to the glass.
Winemaker Louis van der Riet describes this unwooded, natural-fermented Chardonnay as being a well-rounded wine displaying full flavours of lime, grapefruit and fatty butterscotch. These flavours result in a lingering complex aftertaste and well-integrated acidity. The perfect wine to enjoy on its own or served with most pasta dishes and pizzas, or even heavy fleshed fish such as Tuna and Yellowtail. The flavours are also enhanced beautifully when served with a delicious Sunday braai chicken.
Another superb Value-for-Money wine is the Tinta Barocca Rosé 2014, one of only two of this variety currently produced in South Africa. Beautiful in colour with a distinct freshness, Louis says this as a lovely, well-balanced and dry rosé, made from premium Portuguese varietal Tinta Barocca grapes. Enjoy, chilled, on its own, or with chicken and light pasta dishes.
Last but certainly not least in this range of wines is the Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. A beautiful ruby red colour the wine displays soft elegant dark fruit of plum, mulberries, and dark cherries. Finished by supple tannin’s and notes of cherry cigar, this is the perfect wine to enjoy on its own or with braaied meat dishes.
All three wines will be available from some outlets nationwide from September 2014 and are definitely Value-for-Money at R49 per bottle.
