Boland Cavaliers beat the SWD Eagles

eaglesThe Boland Cavaliers played their best match of the season and downed the SWD Eagles 35-24 (halftime 17-10) in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match played at Outeniqua Park, George on Saturday afternoon.

Putting the turbulent off field events aside, the Cavaliers produced a sparkling display of rugby and race to a 17-0 lead after just 30 minutes.

The first try belonged to big eightman Zandre Jordaan who first employed a powerful fend before forcing his way over the line. Eric Zana converted the try and the visitors were all smiles.

Boland has struggled with sluggish starts throughout the campaign but there was no evidence of this malady in George.

Veteran winger Danwel Demas collected an aimless kick by the Eagles and then passed to Zana in midfield. The fullback lined up a beauty of a dropkick and the Cavaliers were now leading 10-0 after the opening quarter.

Not to be outdone by his fellow outside backs Cheswin Williams then scored a superb try courtesy of some serious footballing skills. Zana added the extras and Boland were cruising at that stage of the match.

Leighton Eksteen , the Eagles flyhalf, then did virtually the same when Boland failed to deal with a kick through. Elric van Vuuren converted the try and the Eagles made it 17-7.

After sustained pressure on the Boland try line a string of kickable penalties were turned down in favour of taking line-outs and scrums. The hosts were unable to breach the resolute defence of the Cavaliers and Van Vuuren finally kicked a penalty on the stroke of halftime.

The Eagles looked to continue their comeback effort after the break and outside centre Brian Skosana went over to make things interesting for the fans. Van Vuuren drew the two teams level and there was all to play for in George.

The Cavaliers struck back immediately and it was Demas who dotted down after the ball was flung wide. Jordaan was in giving mood as he could easily have scored himself but he gave the try to his dreadlocked teammate.

Zana kicked two penalties in the space of five minutes to extend the visitors lead further before Demas clinched the game. He intercepted an Eagles pass and outstripped the covering defence to add try No 4 and also guarantee a full haul of log points.

The conversion by Zana made it 35-17 and the final ten minutes were all about the Eagles trying to get something from the match.

Mzwanele Zito grabbed a late consolation try for the Eagles but it was the Cavaliers day. The result saw them draw level with the Valke on 20 log points and still keep an unlikely push for the playoffs alive.
