KWV The Mentors range has won a trophy medal for the third consecutive year at the Six Nations Wine Challenge. KWV The Mentors Petit Verdot 2012 took the top slot for Other Red Varieties at the awards, announced on October 8th in Sydney. KWV the Mentors Semillon 2013 won a Gold Medal.
KWV The Mentors Grenache Blanc 2011 and KWV The Mentors Pinotage 2011 took home trophy prizes in 2012 and 2013.
The objective of the Challenge is to discover and promote excellence in New World Wine Champions.
The successes at the Six Nations come on the back of KWV’s The Mentors range winning no less than three Double Gold medals at the prestigious Veritas 2014 Awards held in Cape Town on October 4th. KWV The Mentors Petit Verdot 2011, Sauvignon Blanc 2012 and Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2009 took the honours.
These awards, ‘the Oscars of the wine industry’ also recognised KWV as South Africa’s Best Producer for an unprecedented fourth year in a row.
Commenting on the win Izele van Blerk, wine maker at KWV, said, “This wine is a good example of an experimental and innovative approach to winemaking. We constantly challange ourselves in our viticultural and winemaking techniques to always improve on quality from one vintage to the other. Each vintage needs to be better than the last.
Therefore it comes as no surprise that this wine originated from a trial batch that we experimented on with Petit Verdot.
She added, “We see ourselves as the pioneers of alternative grape varietals in South Africa. Petit Verdot can be a challenging grape, and are particularly excited about its future as it suits our growing conditions really well. This is what the Mentors range is all about; capturing and sharing special parcels that showcase cutting edge winemaking techniques and innovation.”
