North West and Mpumalanga on the move at SA Mid-Am IPT

MIDDELBURG (14 October 2014) – North West and Eastern Province were the A-Section winners in the second round of the South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial, Mpumalanga kept their promotion bid on track as second round action wrapped up at Middelburg Country Club on Tuesday.

A-SECTION

North West defeated Ekurhuleni by five points, Eastern Province beat KwaZulu-Natal by two and Central Gauteng managed to hold off defending champions to win with a narrow one point margin.

North West claimed a clean sweep in the Foursomes.

In spite of a valiant effort from Ekurhuleni in the Singles, Gary Church, Martin Walsh, Johan Krugel and Douglas McCabe racked up the points and Daniel Jansen van Vuuren halved with Rowan du Preez to give North West an 8.5 – 3.5 win.

Eastern Province and KwaZulu-Natal finished the Foursomes at stalemate after both teams reeled in two wins, but EP side had the upper hand in the Singles to win 7 – 5.

Johan Vorster, Christian Pienaar, Karl du Preez and Mzuyanda Zingela scored the winning points for Eastern Province, while Michael Holden halved with Keith Forde and Ryno Ferreira halved with Bradley Davison.

North West has two points and 13 game points, with KZN and Eastern Province tied for second and lagging by just half a game point.

Central held the early edge with a 2.5 – 1.5 lead in the morning.

Leon de Lange and Grant Wood took first blood for Central Gauteng, but Western Province’s Ludwig Schreuder, Riaan Lewis, Dirk van der Merwe and Weyers Janse van Rensburg hit back to put Province in the driver’s seat.

In the last two matches, Kevin Sharp beat Cameron Johnston 3&2 and Steve Williams downed Gerlou Roux 4&3 to seal the win for Central.

B-SECTION

Mpumalanga battled to edge out Boland, but strengthened their bid for promotion with a comprehensive victory over Limpopo to leapfrog overnight leaders, Gauteng North, in the B-Section standings.

Boland scored 3.5 points in the Foursomes, but Mpumalanga’s Brian Naidoo won 3&2, Philip Heyns triumphed 4&2 and Jan Jacobs prevailed 4&3 to close the gap on the competitors.

Jaco Buitendag’s 4&2 win put North West in control and halves from Eddie Daniel and Jasper van der Westhuizen gave the side 6.5 – 5.5 victory.

On the flipside of the three-way match, Mpumalanga handed Limpopo an 8.5 – 3.5 drubbing, while Boland took the sting out of their loss by whipping Limpopo 9 – 3.

The battle between Gauteng North and Southern Cape ended in a 6-all draw.

Gauteng North took a 3-1 lead into the Singles, but the Garden Route side rallied to level the scores with a solid showing in the Singles.

Phillip Croukamp and Pieter Cooper scored the points for Gauteng North, while Ivan Williams, James Faber, William Malgas and Henk Geldenhuys countered for Southern Cape.

Gauteng North’s two half points came from Gustav Verster, who halved with Stafie Barnard, and Louis Jonck, who squared his game against Ian Norgarb.

Mpumalanga leads the log with eight points, while Gauteng North held on for second on five points and Southern Cape lurks in third on three points.
