Hartenberg Wine Estate has been awarded a 5-star rating for The Mackenzie 2011 in the latest edition of the authoritative and internationally recognized Platter’s by Diners Club South African WineGuide 2015, due for release mid-November. This is the third time the wine has been awarded the prestigious rating, with the first 5-star ratings received in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
A total of 7 000 wines were judged by a panel of esteemed judges who selected 50 wines, and one new 5-star brandy, for the prestigious 5-star rating.
The Mackenzie pays homeage to the Mackenzie family that headed the development of the new era at Hartenberg Wine Estate. Their vision remains simple: to do whatever it takes to produce wines of outstanding quality by anybody’s standards. To create only what the wine afficianados call ‘the good stuff’. And it is with this vision that celebrated winemaker, Carl Schultz, has instilled his passion in creating an award-winning wine. Previous accolades include a score of 92 from the Wine Spectator in 2004 and 2005, as well as Gold at the 2003 International Wine & Spirits Competition.
Carl describes this classically styled, richly structured wine as displaying strong blackcurrant notes, as well as violets and dark chocolate aromas. The palate has a mélange of vanillin oak flavours, intermingled with black and red fruit. Made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (85%), Petit Verdot (7%), Merlot (6%) and Malbec (2%) this is the perfect investment wine and will reach its full ageing potential if left to mature for eight to 12 years from vintage.
Savour on its own or serve with rich meat dishes with a savoury jus such as a leg of Lamb or Sirloin on the bone. Available directly from the farm at R358 per bottle or select specialist wine stores nationwide.
