The SWD cricket team is still without a victory after they hosted Western Province at the REC Ground in Oudtshoorn the past weekend. Although they had an encouraging performance in the Three Day match, Ross McMillan and his team taste defeat by 43 runs in the Limited over fixture on Sunday.
In the three day match, Western Province, surprisingly declared their first innings at 295/4 (95 overs) after the captain, Pieter Malan, scored 120* and Clyde Fortuin 62. SWD, thanks to a brilliant century by Luthando Mnyanda (109) and good contributions by Pieter Stuurman (87) and Brendon Louw (61) recovered from 35/3 posted 364/9 (declared) for a first innings lead of 69 runs. With the visitors second innings total on 221/3 both captains agreed to a draw at tea time on the final day.
In the one day match, SWD, thanks to a fine bowling performance by Marcello Piedt (3/39 in 10 overs), put early pressure on the visitors but Malan again excelled with the bat and scored an unbeaten 148* to allow Western Province to reach a match winning total of 280/5. There were some encouraging starts by Luthando Mnyanda (47), Hanno Kotze (46) and Ross McMillan but the home side were dismissed for 237 after no match winning partnership emerged from the SWD innings.
