Sunfoil 3-Day Cup, Cross Pool: Easterns v South Western Districts at Benoni, Nov 27-29, 2014
The SWD Cricket team showed real guts and determination the past weekend when the defeated Easterns by a massive 228 runs in their Cricket South Africa Sunfoil Cup Three Day match at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. It was SWD’s first first class victory against their East Rand rivals.
SWD, who batted first, scored 264 after a middle order collapse from 204/4. Sammy-Joe Avontuur (84) and Waldo Lategan (58) made impressive contributions with the bat. In their first innings, Easterns were bowled out for 164 to give the visitors a handy lead of 101 runs. The bowling unit of Ross McMillan (4/48), Gurshwin Rabie (3/55) and Lyndon Volkwyn (2/41) were impressive.
SWD took command of the match in their second innings thanks to a solid batting performance by McMillan (83) and Lategan (138*) with an opening stand of 170. Lategan, who recorded a career best on this level, faced 163 balls (7×6, 12×4) and spent 235 minutes at the crease. Avontuur (44*) also shared an unbeaten 109 runs partnership for the 3rd wicket with Lategan. Easterns, who were set 401 runs for victory, second inning’s was almost a replica of the first as they were dismissed for 162. McMillan (4/21) excelled with the ball again as he bagged eight wickets in the match. Rabie (3/55) and Volkwyn (2/41) again provided vital support.

CSA Provincial T20 Challenge, Easterns v South Western Districts at Benoni, Nov 30, 2014
After recording a comprehensive victory in the three day match SWD, on Sunday, held their nerves to also record a nail biting victory in the Twenty20 match. The match was decided in the Super over eliminator after the scores were tied after each team batted for 20 overs.
Easterns posted 130/3 in their first innings thanks to a fine batting display by JC Fourie (71*; 55 balls; 2×6, 6×4). SWD struggled to get the advantage and left it to the last over as Pieter Stuurman (35*; 21 balls, 1×6, 4×4) hit 14 runs from the over to level scores. Easterns made 16 runs in the super over to which SWD responded with 20/1.
