Rain interrupts play on Day 2 of Coke Week

What often faces the organisers of events such as the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week taking place in Pretoria this week is that rain will intervene, and that’s exactly what happened on the second day of the event on Thursday.

The day started off with persistent showers throughout the city, which meant that the planned declaration cricket matches were changed to T20 clashes, starting at 2pm.

Although they all got going on time, the heavens opened up again soon afterwards, so none of the games could be completed.

Fortunately, the teams will have another chance to play against each other on Friday as the organisers have decided to abandon the two T20 games scheduled for day 3 of the week and rather repeat day two’s fixtures as a 50 overs a side limited overs game.

But all was not lost today.  One game – Namibia v Limpopo – did start in the morning, so it was played as a declaration game. When it was called off the second side had batted enough overs to declare that particular contest a draw.

The Northwest vs Limpopo game did see batting in the second innings and North West were declared winners according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. All the other games go down as “no results”.

The abbreviated action that did take place produced five half centuries. Northerns’ Janneman Malan made 79 not out against Western Province and Sean de Necker knocked up 75 for Boland against Eastern Province.

Other 50s were scored by: Zane Green (57 for Namibia vs Limpopo); Joshua Julus (68 for SWD vs Limpopo) and Isaac Bathandwa (64 for Border vs Griquas).
