George (6 January 2015) – In a little more than a month’s time it will once again be time to let yourself be carried away by the nostalgia of grand old cars dating from another era.
The Southern Cape Old Car Club presents the 19th annual George Old Car Show on Valentine’s weekend 14 and 15 February.
“This year’s theme is Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and will include vintage cars dating from the turn of the previous century to brand new futuristic models,” says Willie van der Merwe, organiser of the event. To fit in with Valentine’s Day, a special display of new and old red vehicles has been arranged.”
The number of exhibits on display for the upcoming show is expected to equal and possibly exceed last year’s 1000 entries. So far more than 300 entries have already been received and as the trend normally is for most persons to register their vehicles during January, many more are expected before the closing date one week ahead of the show.
In addition to the cars dating from the late 1800’s up to 1975, vintage tractors and farm machinery, old stationery engines in perfect working order, as well as one of the largest collections of model cars will be on display. The aim is to cater for the curiosity of everyone, young and old.
“We will also have a display of vintage motorcycles, as well as the latest offerings from the likes of Harley Davidson which will also be on display and available for test runs.”
One of the objectives of the show organisers is to establish the Old Car Show as a destination event for the public. In this regard subtle changes will be incorporated as of this year’s show which will cater for the female companions and children alike. While the gentlemen get nostalgic over yester years vehicles and dream about the futuristic machines of tomorrow, the ladies can relax and shop in the welcome shade of numerous arts and craft stalls that will be combined with homemade delicacies stalls, and will afford an array of goods for sale. “We handpicked these stalls from the ones usually selling their wares at the Outeniqua and Sedgefield markets on Saturday mornings. The food stalls will also offer a variety of good quality fare this year. We want to ensure that we not only support our local community and business vendors but also cater for the delicate pallets of our visitors, giving them that good farm market experience when it comes to our food selections on sale”
In addition to catering for our female visitors, a new play park with adult supervision will be provided to parents with younger kids, allowing mom and dad to have the freedom of movement during the show hours, whilst the kids remain in good care. The beer garden has been extended and will now offer a much bigger sitting area and food on offer.
A bumper crowd is again expected at this year’s Old car Show that will again be at its usual spot on the grounds of the PW Botha College in York Street. We fully expect to exceed the more than 11 000 visitors that came through the Old Car Show gates last year. Come and join us for this festive occasion and make sure we support our local communities. After all, its all about raising money for charity!
