The Eden District Municipality Air Quality Unit has conducted a successful National Air Quality Emission Inventory System (NAEIS) training session with all the listed industries within the Eden region.
The training was facilitated by Dr Patience Gwaze from the Department of Environmental Affairs: Air Quality on Tuesday, 20 January 2015 at the Eden Council Chambers in George.
The NAEIS is a web based atmospheric emissions monitoring and reporting system that provides accurate, current and complete information on all significant sources of identified atmospheric emissions, including greenhouse gas emissions. It is a mandatory requirement and will be regulated by the NAEIS Regulations that will be published in due course.
The potential uses of the system will be to evaluate the effectiveness of current air pollution control programs for human health protection, to offer references to assist in future air permit review, provide technical data to developing future air quality management policies and to provide helpful information to the general public for better understanding our air environment.
In the future industries will have to report their emissions to this online system and will be audited by Eden District Municipality’s Air Quality Unit under leadership of Dr Johan Schoemann. The Provincial and National Departments will have an oversight role.
Dr Schoemann said: “Most of the industries in the Eden region attended the training session, making sure that they are ready when the system goes live within the current year.” The training was well received and Eden District Municipality thanked Dr Gwaze for facilitating the initiative to industries in the Southern Cape.
