GWK Griquas have managed their second victory in this year’s Vodacom Cup competition by beating the SWD Eagles 19-12 in a closely contested affair at Outeniqua Park in George on Friday evening.
After beating the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth last week, Griquas directly headed for George to face an Eagles side that gained good momentum from their victory over the Toyota Free State XV the week before.
Sharpening up their defense this year, the Eagles were a tough nut to crack and the Peacock Blues had to put in everything to come away with the victory. They started the first half well via a penalty from the boot of full back Gouws Prinsloo, but Eagles full back Elric van Vuuren followed with the same in the fifth minute to level the scores.
Prinsloo missed with his second attempt to put the visitors in front, while Van Vuuren slotted another three penalties in succession to put the hosts in the lead. Trailing 12-3 seven minutes before halftime, Griquas put in the hard work and lock and captain Jaco Nepgen burst over for his try in the 33rd minute, which Prinsloo converted.
Van Vuuren missed with his penalty attempt to take the lead and Prinsloo kicked one on the halftime hooter to make the score 13-12 in Griquas favour after a hard fought first 40 minutes.
What followed in the second half was 40 minutes of fury, with not the Eagles nor Griquas giving anything away on defense. In the end it was two penalties from Prinsloo, one in the 45th minute and the other in the 75th, that clinched the game for the men from Kimberley.
GWK Griquas 19 (13): Try: Jaco Nepgen. Conversion: Gouws Prinsloo. Penalties: Gouws Prinsloo (4).
SWD Eagles 12 (12): Penalties: Elric van Vuuren (4).
